Welcome to the first installment of the Powermat blog! We’ll be using this space to keep you updated on the latest Powermat news, to fill you in on product updates and to get your feedback.
Tripping the light fantastic in a wireless environment, but not tripping over the wires to do it, Powermat technology provides cordless electrical power to all your electronic devices without individualized power cords or chargers and without accessing multiple sockets or docking stations. Yes, we’re that good.
How is this monumental achievement possible, you ask. Well, to begin with (and for those of you who continue to doubt us, Thomas) we have neither reinvented the laws of Physics nor are we engaging in some new form of prestidigitation. In fact, Powermat utilizes principals of magnetic induction (a phenomenon which has been around since the dawn of time) and its own proprietary surface enhancement technology (SET, as in “on your mark…“) to take power from the wall at one access point, put it through a converter and after manipulating the frequency of the electrical current, convert it to magnetic energy.
Too good to be true, you say? Well, it only gets better. Powermat is energy efficient; delivering targeted energy, as needed, to operate devices in direct contact with the mat. And it’s an effective fire safety tool that eliminates the need for multiple outlets and along with it, any potential for sparking, a major cause of fire in and outside the home. And, of course, with the elimination of outlets, you no longer need to worry about that precocious six-year old and his tendency to stick any metal object he can find into the socket.
From whence did this new technology come, you ask. And why now is it so suddenly available, you ask again. Good questions all. Answers: Remarkably, it’s not so sudden. In fact, at the turn of the century a man named Nikola Tesla experimented with the transfer of wireless energy and learned that it’s hard to keep an assistant with third-degree burns over three-quarters of his body (just joking, kids.) In truth, his failing was that he couldn’t effectively control the energy once he released it into the air. You see, energy has the predisposition to diffuse at will and that has impeded scientists’ ability to effectively harvest and focus wireless energy in a safe and useful way. (wait for it…) UNTIL NOW!
Powermat solves the “Tesla dilemma” by utilizing proximity. Huh? What I mean to say is that the electronic device in question (be it cell phone, laptop, or PDA) must sit directly on the powermat to operate. When it does, there is an “electronic handshake” between the device and the mat whereby the device announces itself to the mat, and says “howdy…I’m a Nokia phone and I require this amount of power” In response the mat only supplies the power necessary for that particular Nokia phone and only to the degree necessary to operate it. Simple? Yes. Ingenious? Hardly. Why didn’t anyone else think of that? Beats me.
Powermat is the safe, cost effective, environmentally friendly (color us green) and responsible way of enabling any surface to operate as a power supply.
Plug it in, Plug it in:
Powermat is the answer to the universal cry “Where can I plug it in?” because there are never enough sockets around when we need them. Be it in our homes, offices, hotel rooms, at the airport, the library or just schmoozing in our favorite coffee house casually sipping an iced-upside-down-double blended-grande-mocha-chip-raspberry-latte-frappucino.
Powermat is THE answer for business travelers suffering from the endless frustration associated with endless socket-seeking in airports, restaurants and hotels.
For architects/designers, it eliminates the tangle of “wire-spaghetti” that accumulates behind our computer monitors, under our desks and in plain sight of busy (and even not so busy) work stations.
For office workers, Powermat provides viable, reliable and completely safe access to power at their fingertips (note: For those of you in small offices where lack of access to power outlets is an acceptable excuse for work-product tardiness, the jig is now officially up.)
For general consumers, Powermat represents a new frontier (Note to marketing team et al: William Shatner product endorsement? How about Leonard Nimoy? What’s he doing these days?) that promises versatility and convenience ranging from the ability to simultaneously charge multiple electronic devices, to the eventual introduction of the “house without wires” – currently under construction in Japan.
With the advent of surface enhancement technology, we have gained the capacity to transform surfaces of all kinds into conduits for wireless power delivery. The practical applications for this groundbreaking technology will fundamentally change the way we interact with our environment and power our world.
In fact in years from now, our kids may never even know what a socket is. Now go ask your parents what it was like playing vinyl records? Or better yet 8 track tapes…
